In the Charlie Hebdo-Bill Maher-lIslamophobia-free speech debates I hear a lot of muddled thinking. Theres a difference between the First Amendment protection of speech from governmental interference and the sticks-and-stones-will-break-your-bones-but-names-will-never-harm-you principle. The second freedom - the idea that you can hurt peoples feelings and not face a violent response from the offended people - is what people marched for in Paris. And it includes the right to picket Rush Limbaugh, try to shut down magazines or prevent Bill Maher from speaking at a commencement.
