In the City this Week: Jan. 5-10 Posted Date: 1/5/2015 Jan. 5: HPC Meets. The Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) will hold its regularly scheduled meeting today at 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall Annex Multi-Purpose Room, located at 300 N. Lee Street. The HPC is responsible for ensuring any new development or redevelopment within the Local Historic District is consistent with the locally adopted design guidelines. Jan. 6: Services at Patterson Street Post Office to Relocate: A public meeting was held recently regarding the U.S. Postal Services plans to relocate the retail services of the 401 N. Patterson Street office. Click here to read the decision letter from U. S. Postal Service and for the opportunity to make an appeal by the Jan. 6, 2015 deadline. Jan. 6: Notice of Public Hearing. A public hearing at 5:30 p.m. ,on Jan. 6, in the Valdosta City Hall Annex Multi-Purpose Room, will seek citizen participation in the development of the City of Valdosta 2015-2020 Consolidated Plan and 2015-2016 Annual Action Plan for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This plan provides for an assessment of needs, outlines a five-year strategy, and establishes the proposed use of grant funds. Citizens are encouraged to attend the meeting, or contact: City of Valdosta Neighborhood Development Division, Room 200, 300 North Lee Street, between the hours of 8 am - 5 pm, or call (229) 671-3617. Jan 6: Valdosta City Council Meets for Work Session. The Mayor and City Council will meet for a work session on Tuesday, beginning at 5:30 p.m., which allows council members to spend an adequate amount of time discussing agenda items. The meeting is open to the general public and is held in the second-floor Council Chambers of City Hall, at 216 E. Central Avenue. Jan. 7-8: Post-Holiday Traffic Resumes. Children enrolled in the County and City Schools Systems, who have enjoyed a nice holiday break, return to the classroom this Wednesday and Thursday respectively. Motorists should allow themselves extra time to get to their various destinations-particularly in the early mornings and mid-afternoons-due to the additional vehicles and buses on the streets. Please drive carefully, for your sake and the sakes of others. Jan. 8: Valdosta City Council Meets. The Mayor and City Council will hold their first City Council meeting of the New Year, on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., in the second-floor City Hall Council Chambers. This meeting is open to the general public. Click here to view the agenda. The Mayor and Council look forward to seeing you there. Jan. 9: Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. The City of Valdosta, along with communities across our country, will observe a Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (L.E.A.D.), on Friday, Jan. 9. The observance was created and promoted nationwide by the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy Associates (FBINAA) to showcase the rewarding-yet often challenging-career field, particularly in light of recent negativity directed toward law enforcement nationally. Citizens are encouraged to wear blue, thank a police officer or show any other act of appreciation for these dedicated public safety personnel who put their lives on the line daily to protect the citizens they serve. Jan. 9-10: Mayor/Council Retreat. The Mayor and City Council will hold their annual retreat this weekend to discuss city issues, projects, and the overall outlook for the upcoming year. Tickets are on sale for the 2015 Bird Supper, scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015, at the Georgia Railroad Depot, in Atlanta, beginning at 5 p.m. Tickets for the annual event, co-sponsored by the City of Valdosta and the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners, may be purchased for $50 each.
