In the Jewish religion of Jesus’ day, only the high priest could pass beyond the temple curtain into God’s holy presence, and then only on one day per year (the Day of Atonement). No one else could approach God alone. When Jesus died on the cross, God tore the temple curtain in two, signifying the end of our separation from him. Are you still living on one side of the curtain, allowing your sin to separate you from your God? Are you content to know him from a distance? Jesus made a way for us to know God intimately, so that we might call him not just Savior and Lord, but Father and Friend.
