In the London Evening Standard, Melanie McDonagh draws lessons from the state visit by Irish President Michael D Higgins: “In short, if the Irish model were followed by an independent Scotland, there wouldn’t be that much for England to be afraid of — there’d still be a flow of bright, articulate Scots coming down here to run things. There’d still be all the cultural and historic ties. “In lots of ways the border wouldn’t matter. The ties that bind us aren’t really about statehood so much as being friends, relations, neighbours; that’s true of Ireland, and of Scotland”. Proud Scots and Yes campaigners “wherever they’re from” The New York Times highlights the broad mix of identities and backgrounds of those campaigning for Yes. “This is civic nationalism, not ethnic nationalism,” comments Maciej Wiczynski, a hospital worker and a volunteer in the Polish-for-Yes campaign. Humza Yousaf, Minister for External Affairs sums it up: “It doesn’t matter where you come from, what matters is where we’re going as a nation. You can be Pakistani-Scottish, Polish-Scottish, even English-Scottish.”
