In the News... The Fight for Injured Workers... As many of you know, since 1999 I have been an Activist and Advocate for the Rights of Injured Workers. As an Injured Worker myself, I found in the beginning that this Fight was one that I seemed to travel alone, except for other Injured Workers who also were often isolated from responsible help, understanding and support. Since that time, and through the ongoing struggle, I began to work with other Injured Workers and Advocates, both in Nevada and then across the country, in an effort to Expose the Truth and Abuse which exists within these Workmens Compensation Schemes throughout our Country and the World. One huge challenge I discovered was that there was no Real Voice for the Injured Worker within the United States. The AFL-CIO had been active previously but had since diminished and then removed their National level of activity and pushed this responsibility down to the Local Federation Level where these issues got mixed levels of support and attention. Our Injured Worker Issues and the Fight for Justice is a serious, complex and expensive task, and it is a difficult challenge for well resourced operations let alone groups with many other important issues and priorities to focus upon and few funds. It was not until I had been contacted by a group called NESRI, the National Economic Social Rights Initiative, that I found anyone that was willing to take on the Fight and be a Voice for Injured Workers. The Author of the following Op Ed article is Cathy Albisa. Cathy is the Executive Director of NESRI. After finding for far too long in my own Workplace Injury journey that there was NO Voice, You can see and hear that Today, We have a Voice... and a Real Movement has begun to Help Protect the Rights of Injured Workers. Thank You to NESRI, to Cathy Albisa and to all of those that have worked and supported this important aspect of Human Rights and Dignity for our Injured Workers. Our Fight goes on, and it has a Voice and an Important Objective and Purpose! Please take time to look up and Research NESRI. They have made a difference!! Thank You... nesri.org/ Cathy Albisa -- Executive Director Ms. Albisa is a constitutional and human rights lawyer with a background on the right to health. Ms. Albisa also has significant experience working in partnership with community organizers in the use of human rights standards to strengthen advocacy in the United States. She co-founded NESRI along with Sharda Sekaran and Liz Sullivan in order to build legitimacy for human rights in general, and economic and social rights in particular, in the United States. She is committed to a community-centered and participatory human rights approach that is locally anchored, but universal and global in its vision. Ms. Albisa clerked for the Honorable Mitchell Cohen in the District of New Jersey. She received a BA from the University of Miami and is a graduate of Columbia Law School.
