In the Spring of 2000, Jim and I were given a diagnosis for our oldest son that would change all of our lives. Schizophrenia and bi-polar were terms I had heard about, but had no personal encounter. We were told to rest ourselves to the fact Josh would never be able to function outside a sheltered environment ever again. Talk about devastated. But, the same doctor told Josh that the choice was up to him. He could let the illness control him or control it. There have been some rough days and nights, but he has been stable for almost four years. He has been working with a tutor at North Central State College to work toward the goal of enrolling in college classes. As of yesterday he is scheduled to start classes at NCSC on August 26th for a degree in visual media. For those who have a loved one diagnosed with mental illness; try not to lose hope. Keep encouraging the loved one to pursue their dream even it doesnt seem attainable.
