In the aftermath of Fukushima, Japan drifts steadily towards facism. The legislature is on the verge of passing a broad new states secrets law which would criminalize investigation of details surrounding the Fukushima accident. main.omanobserver.om/?p=32520 Such a law would make it easy for the operators of nuclear power stations to classify all the information related to the plant, even info on releases of radioactive material, under the aegis of state security. The possibility of terrorist attack on a nuclear station is a very good excuse to make everything about it into a secret, and it makes an even more compelling reason to arrest someone for wanting to investigate a nuclear station or anything related to it, or to nuclear power in general The people of Japan have a history of bowing to the government, but even theyre protesting against the law en masse, and individually as editors, attorneys, and elected officials. How much more should we in the US protest against a law that would deprive us of truly vital information, potentially life-saving in some circumstances? This could be a precursor to a similar situation here (although we already have many secrecy laws here, the provision for information release to the U.S. suggests a possible clause in a TPP-type trade agreement to protect nuclear secrets) involving the nuclear industry, who by now are pretty tired of having their dirty laundry hanging out; What is an embarrassment to them could be fatal to us.
