In the corners of the B-17 windshield are opening clear panels The generic term for these are Direct Vision Windows (DVW) Nearly all AAF combat and combat support aircraft had these at some point in 1943 &1944. The reason these seem to come and go on B-17G is that the ETO Air Service organizations added armored glass to its HBs. When a plane had an armored windshield the DVW were foregone. Many had the mod done upon arrival however in peak workloads, sometime a plane began operations without the upgrade. The change-out winshields are not common in the MTO so the DVW usually remain. Some kits give the option. This is also why the side cockpit windows sometimes are thicker. Post
