In the days of Rhodesia, we fought along with Abel Muzorewa before Zimbabwe was born. His picture etched in my consciousness. In Namibia, we fought hard as a country committing enormous resources to the struggle and as students, photos of Sam Nujoma was on the walls of our dorm rooms. Nigeria was a frontline state despite being thousands of miles from Southern Africa. We not only knew who the fighters were, we were them. We had pictures of Mandela, Oliver Tambo and even Mangosuthu Buthelezi pictures everywhere. Today the same Nigeria that was the thorn in the flesh of the apartheid regime and sworn enemy of P. W Botha is now a caricature. The Nigeria who promoted everything South African from Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Lucky Dube and inspired the biggest anti-racial concert at Wembley Stadium is now jeered at. South Africans booed Jonathan and shouted at him to #BringBackOurGirls ! What are sad joke we have become. A leprous nation whose grand old fools like Yoweri Museveni and Robert Mugabe can poke fun at. O ma se o. It is Sunday, a new week, new fears, in the never ending cascade of the most absurd. Cry my beloved country!
