In the early days, the really early days, we had no restrictions - TopicsExpress

In the early days, the really early days, we had no restrictions to our fight or flight response because our lives literally depended on it. If we didnt act on it, we became dead. Today, we still have the response, we just now have to calculate a great deal of factors before we act. Now, if we act on it, we may go to prison or face many negative consequences. While it is comforting that most of us arent faced with a daily threat of death from large animals anymore, we still face threats of varying degrees so it is difficult to have this response ALL the time, but not be able to act on it ALL the time. The man coming at us with the knife will trigger the same response as the man who just cut us off in traffic or the boss with the Napoleon Complex but, unfortunately, we are only allowed to kill one of them. The rate of stress related illness in the world today has a lot to do with this. Without a release, we just internalize and eventually manifest all sorts of diseases. Ive found, at least in my life, that daily exercise and Martial Arts training provides a great outlet. I may not be able to act on the response in the current moment, but later at the gym or while punching something inanimate that wont press charges, I can imagine all sorts of things or just focus on my breathing and release the stress properly. A sedentary lifestyle where you are constantly triggering your desire to fight or flee, without ever fighting or fleeing, will eventually destroy you.
