In the end we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” Today, on Dr. Kings birthday, these two quotes out of all of them, are the most poignant to me. The past weeks & months of heightened recognition of social injustice, I have experienced more disenchanted feelings about friends & people I love, over those who blatantly wave their flag against me. Highly disappointed. Many people dont realize that the majority of this country disagreed & despised Dr. King for his perpetual growth and views on social justice. Many people had the idea that he was asking for too much, that he wasnt patient enough, that he had gotten too big for his own good. Our government was a conspirator in his assassination. The beacon for peaceful protest was murdered for trying to advance justice & equality. The majority of Americans were on the wrong side of history(the wrong side of right). Why? In my opinion it was the silence, it was the comfort & convenience that he spoke of. It is also my opinion that the majority of Americans are again on the wrong side of history today, due to the same silence, comfort & convenience as well as a healthy dose of distraction. Happy Heavenly Birthday to our Elder, the Drum Major for Justice, Peace & Righteousness, Dr. Martin L. King Jr.
