In the great Facebook Music Meme of 2014 I have been given two letters, C and S and will be sharing with you a favourite song by a band with a name that starts with those letters. My first letter is C, prompted by the talented and funny Chris Mackie. There are several albums I will often hanker to listen to. Disraeli Gears by Cream is in the top three of those albums I think are greater than the sum of their brilliant parts. Ive picked Ginger Bakers Blue Condition. Blue Condition is the perfect song about understanding and adjusting to depression and overcoming it. I love the rhythmic pattern of the lyrics. A slow tumble of short sharp words sliding into multiple syllables of the internal rhymes then slurring on to another burst of single syllables. The strings of rhyming words take up more than a quarter of the lyrics. The rhythm and blues structure of the music underpins the theme of mastering depression. The song unfolds at its own unhurried pace just as depression forces its pace on you and can only be met by understanding and adjusting and co opting that pace. Haste is not your friend. Then Blue Condition gives way to my other favourite track on the album, Tales of Brave Ulysess and adventures in the heartlands of the sun. Here it is. If youd like a letter then please request one in the comments.
