In the late evening of November 2, 1957, a spectacular series of sightings began in the Levelland, TX, area. An excited Pedro Saucedo had phoned the Levelland police station reporting that a huge torpedo-shaped craft landed in a field west of town and then rose up and sped directly towards his truck. The trucks lights and engine died as the ship roared overhead, shaking the truck. After the craft shot by, the trucks lights came back on. The officer who took the call dismissed it as a drunken rambling, until he received another call: Jim Wheeler was driving east of town when he found the highway blocked by a similar object, emitting a blinding glare. Wheelers car also ceased to function with the object nearby. Five more almost identical encounters were reported over the next few hours, most along desolate roads. The last reported sightings were by the sheriff and other police officers who witnessed brilliant red lights above the highway. Although the incident made national headlines, the Air Force sent only one investigator from Project Blue Book. He spent less than 24 hours in Levelland, interviewing only six of the witnesses. The Air Force then issued a release which claimed the sightings were nothing more than ball lighting. They subsequently blames all the failed vehicles on wet electrical connections, even though there were no storms in the area.
