In the latest instalment of the gaming podcast Ken and Robin Talk About Stuff, host Robin Laws expressed his ambivalence towards creativity rewards in RPGs. That reminded me of this thought…. I have long been skeptical of the implicit notions (1) that roleplayers are naturally inclined to dull and unimaginative play, but if motivated by power-gamer pay-offs they are able and willing to play well, and (2) that when I am playing a character I am a crummy judge of good role-play, but when I cross the table to the GMs chair I automatically become a connoisseur. These I think are the intrinsic fallacies of the experience-point or story-point award for good role-playing.
