In the lead up to mid-term elections US President Barack Obama grants relief on student loans. Student loans have become a major source of consumer debt as unemployment in the States remains high, leaving millions of recent graduates saddled with heavy debt loads and few job prospects. Student loan debt grew to $1.1trn over the past year, more than Americans owe on their credit cards, their cars, or any other type of non-mortgage debt. Rising tuition fees and a higher share of students taking loans have contributed to this surge, as well as the increase in overall student numbers. The new emphasis on student loans is twofold - reflecting the governments concerns regarding the economy and also an attempt to energise young voters and get them to vote in the November mid-term elections.
