In the month of Ashadham, the Telangana turns into a big village, dancing to the beat of Telangana folk song ‘Maisamma, Maisamma’. It’s a time for thanks-giving to the Mother Goddess for her love and care all through the year. Hundreds of women, clad in silk sarees, carry Bonalu (Bonam means bojanaalu or meal in Telugu) for the mother goddess and her brother ‘Potharaju’, dancing to the beat of Teen-Mar. The month-long Bonalu festival began recently at the Golkonda Jagadamba Mahankali, temple located inside the Golconda Fort atop a hillock. As it is believed that the Goddess Mahankali comes home to her maternal home during the ashadha, people bring offerings of food to show their love and affection, just as they would prepare a special meal when their own daughters visit them.
