In the past couple of weeks weve had two beautiful great horned owls admitted to our center. One was just brought tonight by the gentleman who found him in his yard and the other was rescued last week by staff member Judi Robles. In the second picture, you can see the large, female great horned that found herself on the business end of a skunk. These tenacious predators regularly prey on natures stink bombs and usually suffer no ill effects. However, on occasion, they fail to protect their eyes and end up taking a full spray to the face leading to temporary blindness. As long as she continues to improve, this amazing animal will find herself back out in the wild in no time! In the first picture (the one of me holding the owl up) is the tiny little male great horned that came in just hours ago. This bird is SEVERELY emaciated and showing signs of neurological trauma. The trauma could have been caused by sickness or by blunt force trauma (we dont know yet) but more than likely led to his state of extreme starvation. Unfortunately, once an animal becomes this starved, it is hard to bring them back. However, that wont stop us from trying! Weve started him on a critical care diet to help put some calories in him and get him re-hydrated. If he makes it through the night, he is looking at a long road to recovery. Lets all keep these magnificent predators in our thoughts as they heal and, hopefully, find their way back to freedom. If you would like to help with the care of either bird you can donate via PayPal at backtothewild or send a donation to P.O. Box 423 Castalia, Oh 44824 or give us a call at 419-684-9539 to learn how to help. If you send a donation, remember to mention the animal you are donating towards and that you saw him/her on Facebook. Thank you so much! As always, without you, there is no us for them!
