In the past decade, successive governments have implemented cruel and degrading strategies to punish and deter asylum seekers arriving here by boat. The Age deplores those actions and policies. Australia has a grossly diminished standing in the international community as a result. Now, as Iraq fragments and Syria continues to disintegrate, the government should summon a modicum of moral courage - something that has been entirely absent in its treatment of boat-borne asylum seekers - and declare firmly that it will accept more refugees.
