In the process of contracting a marriage between a nephew and my daughter, I at a point, congratulated my nephew for having become my daughters husband. This was when all the legally prescribed conditions were fulfilled with the exception of only the condition relating to the fixation or mentioning of the dowry. But a brother who is the guardian of my daughter, interrupted the joyous moment by what I prefer to call a very uncouth observation, by saying that the marriage contract remains invalid until when the dowry is fixed. Not only that as he insisted that the dowry so fixed shall either be paid or agreed to be paid at a specified period. Although I didnt say anything, deep down in my heart, I know marriage contract is valid without fixing or mentioning the dowry provided the other conditions are fulfilled. I have already taken care of my brother by giving him my position in secret in line with the teaching of the Holy Prophet(SAW). The purpose of this post therefore, was to enlighten those who may have similar ideas or share the same views with him. May Allah always guide us on the right path(Ameen).
