In the seven years we stayed in Manchester, UK, every morning we used to follow a routine. The council had provided us with 3 differently coloured bins. In one we would keep our garden garbage. In one, recyclable bottles and plastics were stored. Other sundry garbages would be stored in the 3rd bin. Every morning, we would wheel out our bin in the front porch. Sharp at eight, a huge, covered council garbage van would appear. Two hefty smiling men would jump down and empty the bins into their respective compartments and off they would go,collecting garbage from every house in the locality. No one spit on the streets or threw garbage as heavy fine would be involved. Defecating or urinating in public were also unthinkable - a) Because of heavy fines and b) Because of ready availability of public toilets. I dont remember Tony Blair ever gracing the street broom in hand. India can be kept clean if these simple rules are implemented. I have nothing against Modi on this score but when can we escape from these empty gesture politics ? Also as a physician, would my time be better spent in healing my patients than cleaning my neighbourhood?
