In the spirit of #GivingTuesday, have you heard about the ALTERNATIVE GIFT FAIR 2014? It’s a fun holiday bazaar where “shopping” means donating money to non-profits in the name of your loved ones. Each year, the Takoma Park Alternative Gift Fair features 14-18 charities working to make our world a better place. This event is a fun, meaningful way to kick off the holiday season. A recent poll said that 84% of Americans would prefer a less materialistic holiday. Another reported that 85% of Americans like spending time with friends and family a lot, while only 17% placed the same priority on getting lots of presents. The good news is, we can still express our love through gift-giving, and we can make the shopping meaningful, enjoyable, and even inspirational at the Alternative Gift Fair. In 2013, donors contributed over $27,900 to local, national and international charities. At the Alternative Gift Fair, meet locally based charitable organizations vetted by AGGW doing work in the city, region and the world and make donations to these charities, funding a specific service or item from $5 to $100 -. There is a cause for everyone on your list. For each item purchased, receive a gift certificate detailing the gift of honor and charity chosen and give these certificates in lieu of consumer gifts. Gifts examples include: -$10 One week of fresh, local veggies for a low-income family. -$30 Two visits to a mom or baby from a nurse-midwife in Malawi. -$50 One Violence Prevention Outreach Session at a DC/MD/VA middle school. All gifts are tax-deductible. 100% money donated for gifts goes to the charities- no matter how you pay. Checks, cash and credit cards all welcome. Bring the whole family to the gift fair for an afternoon of fun. A special supervised Kids Corner will be provided with staff to entertain your children, with a visit from Santa, while you shop or get a free seated massage at the Serenity Corner. “Eat one/Share one” cookie decorating for kids to decorate and donate cookies to the food pantry for the home bound (delivered by Meals on Wheels). Also a bake sale, raffle with prizes from local businesses, and live music!
