In this #TBT video from 2007, I spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives about the likelihood of Iraq continuing to engage in a civil war whether or not U.S. troops stayed in Iraq. At the time, I called for bringing the troops home rather than having them continue to fight and die in Iraq’s civil war. Today, unresolved political differences between the Shia government in Baghdad and Sunni minority are fueling the current wave of violence that is sweeping across the country. Iraq will continue to be a violent and dangerous country until these two groups reach some form of agreement to co-exist peacefully. But, this conflict is not our fight. Sending American troops will not end the fighting and will only lead to more casualties of our brave soldiers. As I said in 2007, only the Iraqis can decide for themselves when they are ready for peace.
