In this post, Urban Joburg intern Janine Adank introduces her first piece on tactical urbanism in Johannesburg. This is part of a research project she has undertaken that aims to understand various aspects of tactical urbanism in the city, and how various voices in the city aim to redress Joburgs urban fabric. Read more here: urbanjoburg/johannesburg-transient-city/ Nate Berg from City Lab has described tactical urbanism as the following: Guerrilla gardening. Pavement-to-parks. Open streets. These are all urban interventions of a sort – quick, often temporary, cheap projects that aim to make a small part of a city more lively or enjoyable. These types of projects have grown in popularity in recent years, and they even have a new name: tactical urbanism, as in tactics used to improve the urban environment. These tactics tend to be replicable across cities, and in certain instances have become worldwide phenomena. citylab/design/2012/03/guide-tactical-urbanism/1387/
