• Wood Smoke: Friend or Foe? As the winter grabs hold and the temperatures drop, we hear the debate strike up again about wood burning stoves and environmental impact. On one side we have the fans of the wood burner who swear by their efficiency and affordability. On the other hand we have those who are affected by the wood smoke either through respiratory problems or just the soot that it produces. The debate is heated (pardon the pun) however it does raise a few serious points. Lovers of wood fires often quote the CSIRO report that shows that wood is the heating fuel with the lowest greenhouse gas emissions. Those who suffer smoke pollution tend not to care about any report when having to breathe in their neighbours smoke. Maybe the answer lies with those wood burners who perhaps inadvertently are creating more smoke than they realise. I have included links to a couple of documents on how to maintain your wood burner and also how to light it without the annoying smoke that annoys all your neighbours, including those who also burn wood. If you are affected by your neighbour’s fire, maybe a friendly chat over the fence and the sharing of these guides could alleviate the situation.
