In this seventh lesson in the series on prayer we continued to look at the historical perspective of the progression of prayer thorough the scriptures. This is not intended to be an all-inclusive study of everything revealed about prayer but rather a consideration of some significant aspects about prayer in the scriptures. Today we approached this topic from the aspect of barriers to prayer. We see that man’s limited understanding of God from his human viewpoint thinking impacts us very negatively in prayer. Our lack of full knowledge about God and His essence cause us to have questions about prayer: If God already knows everything, why should I pray; If God has already foreordained everything, what difference will it make if I pray; If God is does not change anything why do we need to ask? By pondering these things in our limited understanding we may end up approaching God in prayer with an attitude of having superior knowledge than His. Self-sufficiency is also another barrier in prayer. Some people fail to pray because they rely on themselves for all their needs. This is a display of lack of humility and understanding that all things depend on and come from God. We see that we must guard our hearts carefully in prayer, keep our attitude in check and approach God with knowledge and discernment from the scriptures. We learned that the key to effective prayer is found in fervent and persistent prayer. Need is an overwhelming driving force in prayer. We tend to wait until we have a need to begin to pray. Over time we may become fervent and persistent about that need, turning it into an effective prayer. The greater approach in prayer is to maintain continuous prayer with God which is our fellowship and relationship with Him. If we continually in prayer with God we will be ready when the need strikes. Call to me Part VII, Sunday Message September 8, 2013 gracedoctrinechurch.net/
