In this world of personal change and social transformation, I find that while the two aforementioned ideas would seem to be naturally complimentary, they are often placed in binary, oppositional to each other. Change yourself, then change the world! No, change the world, then yourself. The notion that these two ideas are exclusive is unhealthy and unproductive. It is arrogant to assume that we who are attempting to transform a legacy of internalized violence that still has external engines driving it have an either/or option, for such an option is a luxury. The heart is not more valuable than the body. The body is not more valuable than the soul. The three are an ecosystem of Infinity & if anyone would every attempt to convince you we are soft by demanding that our engines for change focus on the internal as well, remind them of Ernesto Che Guevaras words: Everyday people straighten up their hair, why not the heart. -Mark Gonzales
