In this world whatever is gained is gained only by self-effort; - TopicsExpress

In this world whatever is gained is gained only by self-effort; where failure is encountered it is seen that there had been slackness in the effort. This is obvious, but what is called fate is fictitious, and is not seen. Self-effort, Rama, is that mental, verbal and physical action which is in accordance with the instruction of a holy person well versed in the scriptures. It is only by such effort that Indra became the king of heaven, that Brahma became the creator, and the other deities earned their places. Self-effort is of two categories; that of past births and that of this birth. The latter effectively counteracts the former. Fate is none other than self-effort of a past incarnation. There is a constant conflict between there two in this incarnation; and that which is more powerful triumphs. Brahmarishi Vasistha This are the first words spoken by Sage Vasistha to Lord Rama to destroy the first and foremost dangerous ignorance in the mind of a sincere seeker; that there is such a thing as destiny of which a higher Being is taking care, causing the person to become dull and inactive. The felling that everything is perfect and that one is guided by a inner force, comes from the realisation of non-duality in which the Self, his Self is the omnipresent Being and not from a dual force far away controlling his future. The second realisation is conductive to the state of Samadhi while the first is of Tamasic belief. Fate is none other than karma, or the law of action. What we have thought, done or spoke is affecting the present moment and future to come. While we cannot change the karma of the present moment, we have to accept it as it is, but we are responsible for the future thru our actions, words and thoughts of the present moment. Sage Vasistha is encouraging Lord Rama to take responsability of his life and attain the highest knowledge, instead of complaining against the suffering experienced because of the world appearance Swami Krishnananda
