In what is a dream reunion, DJ Fresh and House Afrika are again - TopicsExpress

In what is a dream reunion, DJ Fresh and House Afrika are again teaming up to revive the big daddy of house compilations, ‘Fresh House Flava’! In the late ‘90s, while Fresh was still an up-and-coming DJ powerhouse on a young regional radio station, Yfm, the ‘Fresh House Flava’ series revolutionized the South African house music scene, placing the selector front-and-centre and making the tracks that were killing nightclubs available to the wider listening public. Few could have foreseen the impact these collections would have: today DJ-driven compilations are commonplace, and Fresh has graduated to being “The Big Dawg” on South Africa’s biggest national station, 5fm, where he hosts a drive-time show that showcases just how large the dance music he was pushing a decade-and-a-half ago has become. In a return to the roots and a nod to the future, Fresh has teamed up with House Afrika and Sony Music to resurrect this seminal line, and volume 7 in the ‘Fresh House Flava’ series is due later this year. But before the return of the prodigal funk son, the label will be re-releasing the first two volumes in the ground-breaking series – and they sound as fresh as ever. ‘Fresh House Flava Vol. 1’ was a demonstration of just how advance South Africa’s house tastes were, placing classics by the likes of Mood II Swing (the classics “All Night Long” and “Ohh”), Mysterious People (the evergreen “Love Revolution”), Presence (aka Charles Webster) and the recently dearly-departed Romathony in living rooms and taxis across the country. ‘Fresh House Flava Vol. 2’ was equally game-changing, featuring anthem like Blue 6’s “Sweet Love”, Sandy Rivera’s “Come Into My Room”, Shazz’s “Innerside” and Herbert’s “Resident”. As an indication of just how far ahead Fresh was as a taste-maker, these cuts still sound as crisp and cool as ever - and still get played out by discerning young DJs. If the now nationwide-known spinner can come anywhere close to recreating his feats from 15 years back, we’re in for something special. In the meantime, get reacquainted with history – and class.
