Inception workshop: EU-GIZ Adapting to Climate Change and Sustainable Energy (ACSE) programme The inception workshop for the new European Union (EU) funded regional programme: Adapting to Climate Change and Sustainable Energy (ACSE) will be held on 29 and 30 May, 2014 at Des Vos on the Park, Suva, Fiji. The workshop will be officially opened on Thursday 29 May by the Fiji Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr Amena Yauvoli. Also attending will be the Delegation of the EU for the Pacific - Head of Infrastructure and Natural Resources, Mr Jesus Lavina, and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) Country Manager for the Philippines and the Pacific, Mr Philipp Quitmann. The 18.6million Euro ACSE programme was formalised on 09 May 2014 with the official signing of a delegation agreement between the EU and GIZ, the programme implementing partner. The ACSE programme responds to the expressed needs of Pacific Island countries to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, improve energy security and to strengthen their capacities to effectively respond to the adverse effects of climate change and enhance sustainable livelihoods. The main objective of the inception workshop is to inform national climate change and energy sector representatives, regional organisations, and development and donor agencies on the details of the ASCE programme and its implementation framework. This includes a familiarisation session with country representatives on the procedures for project development and implementation. The ACSE programme will support fifteen countries which, along with Fiji, include the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Republic of Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Timor- Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
