Incompetence and politicking in Zamboanga Five soldiers were killed, 46 soldiers wounded in the firefights in the previous days, and our President still staged a photo ops event. A Marine captain told me the feedback he got from his comrades: “Our soldiers were deeply insulted by that event. They were risking their lives and were going into battle, and Aquino gave them boxes of ‘goodies’ as if they were flood victims or indigents. Notice in the photo that the soldier wasn’t smiling at all as Aquino was smiling idiotically ear to ear.” Aquino distributed 4,000 cell cards—it wasn’t clear if it had even “loads”—to our soldiers going to battle? (Or was he merely promoting telcos’ cell cards?) That, while videos showed a trooper begging for food from a civilian and soldiers eating rice spread on banana leaf on a dirty street. The Zamboanga crisis has resulted in 53 dead, 70 wounded, and 60,000 residents in evacuation centers, and business closed down for a week now. Dubbing Aquino’s administration a student council government isn’t funny anymore.
