Ind. Sen. Lonnie Randolph has once again sponsored a bill to abolish Indianas death penalty, Senate Bill 136. This article quotes the fiscal impact statement that it would cost the state $1.067 million to commute the sentences of the twelve individuals on death row to life without parole, although this is based on an unrealistic average life expectancy of 80 years. The average life expectancy within our prisons is shamefully somewhere closer to 60 years. On the savings side, the fiscal impact statement finds a total savings of $338,582 to the state and counties for each potential capital case that would be tried instead as a Life without Parole case.
