Independent body must appoint Police Commissioners Source: PNG Loop 30/08/14 Displaced Assistant Commissioner of Crimes Thomas Eluh said the appointment of a Police Commissioner should be vested with an independent authority far removed from politics. “Over the years successive governments have circumvented the process by appointing police Commissioners and they were prone to political influence and directives, Eluh said today. He said an appointment procedure similar to that of the Chief Justice should be applied in the appointment of a Police Commissioner to preserve the integrity of this high office. “A committee of eminent persons such as retired judges, clergymen, reputable business and women’s reps should be formed for such appointments and the contract terms extended so police Commissioners can impartially perform without fear or favor. ” ACP Eluh who was suspended at the height of the recent political fiasco said the office of the Commissioner should be freed from the current political bondage. “The Constabulary remains compromised unless the powers of appointment are removed from politicians,” he said.
