PORTLAND PRISON AS A MILITARY BARRACKS. It freely reported - TopicsExpress

PORTLAND PRISON AS A MILITARY BARRACKS. It freely reported among the prison officers at Portland Convict Establishment that the Government has in contemplation works which will lead to the eventual abolition of Portland penal institution. For some years the number of prisoners has been steadily diminishing, and it is now asserted that the War Office propose to transform the prison buildings into huge military barracks. At present there are extensive barracks at the Verne Citadel, and if the proposal carried into effect it will add enormously to the importance of Portland as a military station. It is understood that several hundred convicts are under orders to leave, and a number of leading officials expect shortly to be moved to other prisons.
