These Prominent Indians Too Deserve Bharat Ratna 1. Azim Premji: Azim Premji has proven to be one of the greatest philanthropist of an entrepreneur in his truly inspiring career of soaps to software. One of the most prominent businessmen of the country and a role model for many young entrepreneurs around the world, the Chairman of Wipro is equally admired for his understanding of human values. Azim Premji is a true asset of our nation not only because he helped the country in becoming a significant player on the economic front but also because of his philanthropic nature. This itself has proved how deserving he is for India’s prestigious award. 2. Mary Kom: Mary Kom, a five- time world champion who had won the Bronze Medal at the London Olympic Games has created a history for being the first Indian Women Boxer to have won an individual medal in the Olympics. Despite all the social taboo and hindrance Mary has fought all her way to the top. Bestowing a country’s highest civilian award to a determined and strong willed woman like her will be like saluting and respecting the entire women folks of the country. 3. Dilip Kumar: Dilip Kumar, the Last Mughal of Hindi cinema brought in a style of which was a marked of departure from the loud theatrics of the 1940s and defined what acting would remain to be in cinema thereafter. Comedy, tragedy, action, romance and drama were on his finger-tips. He is one such actor who lived each character to perfection. He was the first superstar of independent India and personified the ideals of a generation. So, to honour an actor like him with the highest award like Bharat Ratna, for the most prized relic of cinema, would continue to inspire generation after generation. 4. Dr E Sreedharan: Dr E. Sreedharan, ‘The Architect of Delhi Metro’ is an Indian civil engineer who served as the managing director of Delhi Metro between 1995 and 2012. He was the chief planner of 144.3 billion Delhi Metro project. He is fondly known as the ‘Metro Man’ for changing the way Delhiites commute today. Not just Delhi metro, he laid his hand for rebuilding the Pamban bridge in just 46 days, which was washed away by a cyclone that connected Rameshwaram to mainland Tamil Nadu. So, many of his supporters backed him for the country’s most prestigious award, the Bharat Ratna. 5. Mahatma Gandhi: Mahatma Gandhi, one of the pioneers of non-violent resistance, which he called Satyagraha, is deservingly the first leader in focus in our list. He shook the very foundation of the mighty British Raj in India without taking up arms and was instrumental in the downfall of the colonial rule the country in 1947. Officially embraced as the Father of the Nation by the government and the people of India, he is often referred to as Mahatma, which means, ‘A Great Soul’. His birthday, 2nd of October, is celebrated in India and around the world as the International Day of Non-Violence. For a great man like Gandhi, it is surprising to know that he was not at all among the awardees of the country’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna. But, the award was instituted only in the year 1954, 6 years after Mahatma Gandhi died. Earlier Bharat Ratna were conferred only to those Indians who were alive but after some year it was amended. 6. Subhash Chandra Bose: Subhas Chandra Bose, affectionately called as Netaji, was one of the most prominent leaders of Indian freedom struggle. He founded Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj) to overthrow British Empire from India and came to acquire legendary status among Indian masses. This great leader was once awarded Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1992. But, the award was later withdrawn in response to a Supreme Court of India directive following a Public Interest Litigation filed in the Court against the posthumous nature of the award. The Award Committee could not give conclusive evidence of Bose’s death and thus it invalidated the posthumous award. It is the only incident in the history of Bharat Ratna that an award was withdrawn. 7. Major Dhyan Chand: Major Dhyan Chand was the first sportsperson, who put India on the sporting map and made the world stand up and take notice of India. Such was the Dhyan Chand’s ability that he was appreciated by none other than Hitler during the Olympics in Germany. With his magical stickwork, He has almost every possible record in hockey and some of which stand even 70 years later and retuned with gold medal all three times he played Olympics. Such was the greatness of this sporting icon that 29th August is celebrated as National Sports Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of India’s first sporting legend. It is still and unbelievable on why the recommendation for a Bharat Ratna for this hockey wizard has been rejected twice
