India’s Congress party led government, battling a falling currency and record current-account deficit, have a new problem to tackle- Record high onion prices. Onions are an important part of every family’s shopping list in India. It is almost omnipresent in Indian food. It really would sting the staple of cooking and salad plates. The usual price for a kilogram of Onion would be between Rs.15-20 (0.14p to 0.20 pence) approximately has almost reached Rs.100 (more than 1 GBP) now. The surge is adding considerable strain to household budgets. The Prime Minister has given orders to stop onion exports to other countries. The increasing prices have not only hit the household grocery budgets, but also had an effect on restaurants, many of which usually serve pickled onions or raw onion rings as a common accompaniment with orders. Ironically, the cost of the onions in the dish might cost more than the dish itself !!
