Individuals have largely shunned the stockmarket because it has largely become a ring for speculators, conmen and swindlers. In the last few years as many as 700 comapnies have vanished into the thin air taking with them over Rs.29000 crores collected from the open market as initial public offerings (IPOs). Now you have a good idea why people prefer Gold and Land over Shares. Incidentally, in Delhi, the unchallenged epicentre of Indian con artistry, of the 2293 companies listed 1497 are non-compliant. which means they have not filed their audited balance sheets, suggesting that they dont have anything to file or just not there to file. It is believed that over half the companies listed in the BSE or NSE are in fact, for all practical purposes, vanished companies, though they have not be classified so officially. Possibly therein lies another scandal?
