Inexpensive Insulated dog House Plans Dogs (and outside cats) can suffer in winter without proper housing but sometimes pets do have to be left outside so you need an insulated shelter and this inexpensive straw shelter will help. Straw is an excellent insulator R20 and cheap (about $3 a bale) and the animal will provide enough body heat to heat the small space and stay warm. Materials: You will need 4 bales of straw, two 2x4x8s, one sheet 4x8 plywood, shingles or roofing metal, one doggy door or make your own. Place 3 bales as shown in the picture and use the 4th bale as stuffing in the gap between the roof and bales and a thick layer of bedding. Take care of your pets and keep them warm this winter!
