Influenza virus-what parents need to know. Influenza (flu) is a seasonal respiratory virus that can effect individuals of all ages. However there are high risk populations that are particularly susceptible to influenza. · Young children · Pregnant women · Healthcare providers · Individuals > 65 years of age · Individuals with chronic respiratory issues The influenza virus typically peaks during December-February each winter but can also occur as early as October or as late at May. Symptoms can include: Cough, fever, muscle or body aches, chills, fatigue, stuffy nose & sore throat. Children can also present with vomiting and diarrhea. The CDC recommends an annual influenza vaccine for everyone 6 months and older. The influenza vaccine is available in 2 routes · Intramuscular injection (shot) · Intranasal (up the nose) Both vaccines are a weaken forms of the virus, referred to as an attenuated virus. The intranasal version, Flumist is a live virus which typically results in a better immune response and coverage against illness of influenza. The injection is an inactivated virus. This version historically is used in those who cannot tolerate the live virus vaccine. Protecting yourself and your family during the influenza season each year. 1. Get vaccinated 2. Use good hand washing techniques 3. Cover your cough-best with the elbow or tissue 4. Wipe surfaces with anti-viral/bacterial products 5. Stay away from sick people 6. Stay home if you are ill 7.
