Information sessions are being held about a multi-million pounds project to reduce congestion on one of the county’s busiest sections of road. A series of three events in Chester-le-Street this month will give residents the chance to ask questions and air their views about the £3.1m project to ease congestion on the A167. Jointly funded by Durham County Council and an award from the Government’s Local Pinch Point Fund, the scheme will widen the junction of Park Road and Junction 63 of the A1(M) (Blind Lane Interchange). Not only will this improve traffic flow through the junction but it will also significantly reduce queues and delays during peak times. Staff from the council’s Strategic Traffic Management Team will be attending the sessions, all held at Chester-le-Street’s Civic Centre, to answer people’s questions, discuss the project and listen to resident’s views. The sessions will take place as follows: July 18 – 1.00pm to 7.00pm July 19 – 10.00am to 6.00pm July 20 – 10.00am to 2.00pm Adrian White, head of transport, said: “Widening such a crucial section of road will make life easier for motorists and ease traffic congestion in the area. It’s essential that local residents are kept fully informed of the plans and that their views are heard. This will help us to ensure that any disruption caused while the roads are improved is kept to a minimum.” The project is scheduled to be completed in 2014. Utility diversion works will start in early 2014 with construction beginning in March.
