Innumeracy, the inabity to reason quantitatively is a problem in America today. So it saddens me when even the NYT fails basic math. This editorial says that 80% of our water goes to agriculture leaving 20% for industrial and residential use. Yet most of the editorial focuses on pools, lawns and washing down sidewalks while farmers continue to flood fields. Given the stated goal of a 20% reduction, without 16% of that coming from agriculture that goal is a non-starter. Yet the busybody do-gooders who want to shame people into only showering on alternate days, letting their lawns go brown and draining their pools are now out in force. So spare me the moralizing about waste and let me know when we start to get serious about water consumption in this state.
