“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” -Albert Einstein Let’s face it, Congressional approval ratings are dismal. They are the most inept branch of our government these days. Political infighting, maneuvering to gain votes for pet projects and pork barrel spending for their constituents, and the never ending absurd laws being passed by Congress have Americans calling for term limits, pay cuts, and ending Congressional vacations. In reality, what would you expect out of professional politicians WE have elected and sent to a cesspool of corruption to represent our local interest? When looking at how many members of Congress have 20 or more years in service as either a Senator or Representative, it is actually only a small percentage. Only 16 out of 100 Senators have 20 plus years in the Senate, and 69 out of 435 Representatives are over the 20 year mark. Clearly we have a problem with our lawmakers in Washington, but if we were to admit the truth, we have brought this problem on ourselves. We are the ones who have allowed the political process to become what it is today by consistently reelecting the same ineffective career politicians to represent us at the national level expecting things to improve. The issue is, we have sent a steady stream of attorneys and self proclaimed professional politicians to DC and trusting them to make laws that favor the American people when in fact they are looking out for their own best interest. They are detached from the everyday struggles of the working class; most have been career students, grooming themselves for the political world. Saying this, the blame doesn’t lie solely on the members of Congress. They have been lacking direction and leadership from the White House for some time now. In fact, the past 2 administrations have been politically divisive, whether intentional or not. The current administration has used this divisiveness as an excuse to illegally bypass Congress on several key issues, in turn violating our Constitution and basically trying to set his administration and the Democratic Party up to reign over the United States like some third world country. In all fairness, when given the opportunity, the Republicans do the same. This is the side affect of having a two party system of government run by attorneys making laws that favor themselves. In short, if America is to survive as we know it, Congressional term limits aren’t the only solution. In fact, it would do little to change the mindset in Washington. We have the ability to limit Congressional terms through the election process. We need to vet our politicians better, look at their job performance, and not be set on voting for one of the two choices they have given us. Remember the definition of insanity given to us by Einstein, and let’s break the cycle in 2016!
