Inside Leos Lab: 1976 Leo Fender prototype Music Man Sabre guitar. Note the split-coil pickups with large Alnico pole pieces, the same pickup concept shared with the Stingray bass prototype we posted last month. This Sabre prototype does not have logo artwork applied to the headstock, nor is the logo stamped into the bridge, but the neck plate is stamped with the Music Man logo. G&L fans will note that Leo returned to his split-coil guitar pickup concept a decade later, applying his Magnetic Field Design for the Comanche Z-coil pickup. This prototype is a fascinating artifact of Leo Fenders pioneering history, a vital link between where hed gone before and where he was yet to go.
