Inside the DB helmet Pop Warner, High school, collage and Semi Pro DBs this is for you.... Try this true key adjustment in practice and in your film work because the rules are diferant at the lower levels of the game for the offensive line men moving up field after the snap of the ball then in the traditional run pass key in the NFL..... Topic: Adjusting the Count in Your Defense. When implementing my key system into your defense sometimes adjustments are necessary to combat the offense and its movements and the rules of football at lower levels of the game such as Pop Warner, High Schools, collage and Semi pro. Sometimes the players to a man in the defensive key system must adjust for the simple reason that some offenses or should I say some offensive linemen may be sluggish (note stand up first then run) into the (ENZ) to the point that your players could and will receive a false run pass key…. You counter and adjust the count up words or double count this only happens when the defense is trying to get a true run/pass key to dictate and to decipher what the offense is trying to do to whether it’s run or pass. So the hard fast rule in the key system defense will help the player to a man across the board to adjust their count upward in the secondary and LB this is what I teach the young defensive player and it goes as follows: I ask the defensive player when he sees that movement occurs then he is to double count saying these words to themselves: 1&2&3! 1&2&3! double count (the defensive backs and linebackers say it twice) by the time the secondary and backers are into the second set of numbers in the defensive count with their feet moving ( read steps or shuffle steps) then the true play or should I say the offense’s true intentions will be known to weather it is run or pass. Again this is a very simple adjustment when the offensive linemen are moving late or sluggish into the extended neutral zone (meaning arriving late into the extended neutral zone down low meaning in the green grass behind the nose tackle’s heels). Then I instruct the defensive player to double count to close the QB’s 3 second play action window. When movements occurs and the player’s feet move remember each step constitutes a number in my key system’s alert mechanism and answers the dilemma to the question first: run or pass. 1&2&3! 1&2&3 run or 1&2&31&2& the true intentions of the offense to run or pass will show! Then the defensive player will see run or pass in the second set of numbers. The reader must understand that there are no offenses that take 6 seconds to show the true intentions to run or pass. So the players will see the true run/pass key going into the second set of numbers that are in the middle. From Page 31 in the key system work book pick up your copy today......
