Inspect snowblowers before use, keep fuel in stock Before the first winter storm, homeowners and contractors should perform maintenance on snowblowers, changing out the oil and spark plugs and inspecting the belts, the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute advises. Using the right fuel is also important, so it is a good idea to store fuel in case gas stations are closed during a power outage. We caution equipment users to keep hands away from the machines auger or chute and know where the power cord is at all times during use.
