Inspiration comes from many directions. For me it comes from - TopicsExpress

Inspiration comes from many directions. For me it comes from the artists and people I know who have found a way to continue to create. As you mature as an artist you will go through many stages. Certainly there are your big stages, major birthdays, stepping stones etc., but dont overlook the daily inspirations that lead you and sustain you on your way TO those destination zones. As you look to the future, reach out to those people who affect you in a positive way. You more than likely will find a person on the other side who is searching just as hard. Even if it is as daily sustenance and not as the end all be all of existence, the relationship you build could lead to things later on. It could mean that you chart a direction in your life. Composer Sven Helbig is an example of that. We do not know each other, in fact he only knows my work because I was searching, for something... Ive been searching for like minded collaborative artists who share a similar and inchoate vision of classical music. 21st century Classical artists are processing modernity and how to create and respond to the demands of the profession. MODERN music, was a term created for the early 20th century. It was dissonant and meant to be, in my opinion, a squelch for the romantic idealisation of a world gone totally mad. Plonks, screeches, cries, secret codes were the order for serious classical music. Tonality, or melodic music was made for popular music and denigrated by the hoi polloi. Until the public just couldnt take it and we went from plonkplinkGANNH!!! to the dadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadad of minimalism. In my simplistic view, a long stretched out form of tonality. Even if it were atonal or non-melodic music, minimalisms phrases were so long, that the normal audiences ear could adapt and take back the meditativeness of music that had been lost for so long. (this is not a wikipedia article, feel free to define these terms here, but kindly and gently) Anyway, in the new age, with more people playing music and a recession hitting, we classical people have been searching for our sound. Our definition of OUR age! Questions: Not just for us, but for history... What does it sound like today? What does it LOOK like today? What are our minds finding? How do we make sound in the digital age? How do we compose and perform it? How does it remain complex enough to hold my attention and stay awesome?! How do we make a living? Its taken a while to find these answers. But I think, for me as a career artist, addicted to the art form of opera and classical music we are swirling nearer to a current Nirvana. I think what Sven is doing pushes me toward hitting an equilibrium that encompasses the music and visual aspect of todays music while retaining the historical impact that classical music requires. Its great stuff. In your art, you are allowed to search and find things that interest you and provide you with support while you find your answers, your definitives. Sometimes you need other people to point to and say, you see? its kind of like this!!! Does this mean you copy exactly what another artist does? Noooo? We humans have a zeitgeist. Its okay to fit within an era and a group think, finding similarities. No one will have your experiences. Those are your biggest assets and can be used to help other artists out. A classical artist helps drag beauty, or whatever their vision is, from the mud of ambivalent and brown obscurity. word
