#InspirationKE via Fred Gori: Watu hutoka mbali! About eight (8) years ago, I was the Corporate Communications Officer at Nation Media Group working under my favourite Boss, Fatuma Hirsi Mohamed. It was the first serious job I had after graduating from the School of Journalism, University of Nairobi. About a year after joining NMG, I obtained a fairly hefty loan from the Nation SACCO to purchase a piece of land so I could have a place to live, just in case. Consequently, my take home was reduced and I could not meet some of my needs. The next month, I walked to Shauri Moyo and asked a fundi to make for me a handcart. He created one within one week and I paid the quoted price of KES 7500. I became the proud owner of a handcart. On weekends, I would arrive in Gikomba Market at dawn, purchase a sack of green maize and hawk it in my Donholm neighbourhood. Business was doing well. I surprised myself every weekend. But some of my customers kept asking, Boss, si wewe ni Mkisii? (Boss, are you from the Kisii Community?). Reason, they could not imagine a man from the Luo community, more so an educated one, engaging in such business. I did the business (it was tough but rewarding, I must admit) until my fortunes at NMG and elsewhere improved, when I carted the handcart to my village-based brothers. Sadly, they sold it within the first month and went back to their begging ways. I share this story because I have observed with growing concern the increasing number of dependent able bodied men and women. These rely on the few who are economically productive while apparently waiting for a white collar job to knock on their doors. Herein lies Kenyas biggest opportunity.
