Instead of carting people off to jail, the police should have issued citations for the following people with a single non-violent criminal charge who did a day or more in the Durham County Jail in the last 30 days because they could not pay a $50 bondsman fee for a $500 bond to get out: no operators license, possession less than 1/2 ounce of marijuana, resisting arrest (with no corresponding charge), trespass, shoplifting, misdemeanor larceny, failure to return rental property, and possession of drug paraphernalia (with no corresponding drug charge). We should not populate our jail with such minor offenses and hold people because they cant afford bond.
