Instead of using a one-size-sits-most curriculum and tweaking it I really want to follow the interests of my children. Im really looking forward to the mystical learning and their coming to me and saying things like, Mumsy dear. Id like a lesson on Platonic solids now. Whoah there, Buttercup. Thats not how it goes. What?! Yeah, it takes a lot of effort to do this unschooling thing. You have to keep interesting things in front of your children, give them activities with other children, but not so many that their schedules get clogged up and they dont have time to explore and figure stuff out. You need to learn about what is normal for their plane of development and then observe to see if whats normal is necessarily normal for your child. It may not be. It takes a lot of thinking to get this right. And sometimes, no matter how much thinking and planning youre doing, its just going to be challenging. Youre going to want to find mentors and collaborators and resources for your older children and that can be difficult. And youll have to resign yourself to their being independent human beings. It can be messy. It can involve and awful lot of driving around. You have to be flexible. Light on your feet. Messy?? It never looks messy when You do it!! Its messy. Trust me. Its messy. But its good.
