Contract will be made under UK law and benefits benchmarked against comparable international civil society organisations. BACKGROUND The ‘Nairobi Process: A Pact for Responsible Business’ is a multi-stakeholder process launched by the Institute for Human Rights and Business (IHRB) in collaboration with the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights in April 2013. It aims to promote responsible business practice, based on respect for international human rights standards during the exploration phase of the emerging oil and gas sector in Kenya. The vision of the Nairobi Process is that natural resources are seen as a widespread benefit for the people of East Africa, and that Kenya avoids the ‘resource curse, becoming instead a model for equitable and sustainable development through the application of responsible business standards and international human rights principles, as embodied inter alia in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. The Nairobi Process brings together the multinational oil and gas companies, ‘majors’ and ‘juniors’ (smaller exploration companies), which have been granted exploration licenses in Kenya with government and civil society stakeholders to address key areas of human rights concern as this nascent sector develops over the Institute for Human Rights and Business, 34b York Way, London, N1 9AB, UK | UK Company No. 06882940 | UK Charity Registration No. 1131790 Website: ihrb.org Telephone: +44 (0) 203 411 4333, Fax: +44 (0) 207 785 9015 2 coming years. * Over the next 12-18 months, activities will potentially expand to include mining companies in the exploration stage of operations. Engaging with stakeholders variously through workshops, seminars, ‘dilemma fora’, commentary and publications, the Nairobi Process seeks to: promote effective due diligence by oil and gas exploration companies to mitigate their social impacts; advocate for stronger policy and legislative protection of rights by host and home governments; build capacity for robust civil society engagement on a range of challenges including the role of public and private security, community consultation, land and water management, indigenous peoples, revenue sharing, transparency and accountability. JOB DESCRIPTION IHRB is seeking to recruit a dynamic, experienced senior manager with a strong knowledge of Kenya and East Africa to direct the Nairobi Process in its early stages of development towards its long-term goal: namely for the Nairobi Process to become an independent and sustainable entity providing a crucial platform for companies, governments, civil society, trade unions and other stakeholders to address dilemmas, challenges and opportunities for shaping responsible business practice, based on respect for human rights, in the extractive sector in Kenya and the wider East Africa region. Key Duties and Responsibilities: Developing and implementing the Nairobi Process’s 3-year strategy to build a centre of expertise and excellence on responsible business in the extractive sector in Kenya and the wider region, Representing the work of the Nairobi Process at senior level with the Kenyan government, the donor community, local and international companies, civil society and media. Leading on delivering the Nairobi Process’ activities including multi-stakeholder meetings, exchange visits, advocacy and dialogue, trade delegation briefings. Developing a strategy for building a sustainable long-term funding base. Working with IHRB and local partners to establish a physical office and Kenyan registered organisation in Nairobi, as funding permits. Ensuring effective communication with multiple audiences through publications, website, mainstream and social media. Overall responsibility for financial and administrative management of the Nairobi Process. Managing the Nairobi Process’ local staff and contracts with external consultants, contractors and suppliers. Communicating regularly with IHRB programme teams in London. Regular travel within Kenya and E. Africa, occasional travel to Europe or USA. Additional post-graduate qualifications in international human rights law, sustainability, CSR or related discipline. Experience Minimum 7-10 years’ experience in project management and/or senior programme post with international organisations in East Africa. Experience of leading a team in developing and delivering a complex programme of work. Experience of working inclusively with multi-stakeholder processes with government, business and civil society. Experience in senior-level representation, public speaking and media engagement. Experience of working in challenging social, economic and/or political environments. Experience of planning and delivering senior-level multi-stakeholder meetings and events. Experience in financial administration, management systems and reporting. 2 years’ work experience in Kenya with international agencies or NGOs or other relevant actors. Diverse experience of working in developing country contexts. Experience of working in the field of human rights and business or with broader CSR or sustainability issues. Experience of delivering programmes funded by donors and meeting donor reporting requirements. Demonstrable understanding of business and legal environment of Kenya. Fluency in written and spoken English. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Knowledge of administrative and management practices related to financing, project management and human resources. Experience in public speaking and senior-level representation with government officials, business representatives and civil society. Strong negotiating and problem-solving skills. Willingness to network and maintain strong working relationships with a range of stakeholders. Proactive and innovative approaches to delivering results. Working knowledge of spoken Swahili. Working knowledge of one other international language other than English and Swahili. Leadership and Management skills Excellent leadership skills. A skilled team leader, able to motivate and support colleagues with diverse needs. Willingness to collaborate and seek compromise where appropriate.
