Instruments of Medieval Torture 15th June - 31st December 2013 Torture has been carried out or sanctioned by individuals, groups and states throughout history from ancient times to present day. In the 21st century torture is prohibited under international law and the domestic laws of most countries as a violation of human rights. However according to Amnesty International, the practice still continues in over 70 countries across the world. This fascinating exhibition takes a look at one of the darkest chapters in human history and discusses the horror that one person can inflict on another in the name of ‘justice’. The exhibition includes displays of over 50 replica torture methods based on objects that have been collected by private collectors and historians across Europe. These include famous contraptions such as the Interrogation Seat, the Witches Chair, the Rack and the notorious Iron Maiden. The displays tell the story of instruments and practices used in Medieval history and beyond to extract information from those suspected of wrongdoing. The effects of these methods ranged from humiliation to severe injury and very often led to certain death. Only previously exhibited once in the UK, this is the first time that this intriguing collection has been displayed in the North East. The controversial nature of this exhibition is sure to arouse different emotions among our visitors but the intention is to raise awareness of this still very current issue and to ask the visitor to stop and think about society’s often indifferent attitude towards torture today. SPECIAL PRESS PREVIEW FRIDAY 14TH JUNE FROM 1PM.
